Who's on the Throne

A reflection test to identify false gods

When we elevate another person in our lives to a place of ultimate authority or devotion, it means we worship them. They take God’s place in our lives. They become our idol, our false god. No human can fill that role. Only God can. This reflection test is designed to help you identify if there is someone who may be sitting on God’s throne in your life.

Where do I turn first? When I’m in trouble, stressed, or need guidance, do I instinctively turn to a human for answers and comfort before turning to God in prayer or seeking wisdom from Scripture?

Who shapes my beliefs? Do I find myself believing something simply because a human said it or taught it to me, without comparing their words to God’s Word or seeking biblical confirmation?

Whose approval is most important to me? Do I feel concerned about disappointing a certain human more than I do about displeasing God? In other words, does human opinion have more weight than God’s commands in my life?

Considering the 1 to 3 people you identified earlier, (add some names if you didn’t get them in there yet) How do I react when they make mistakes? If they mess up, do I excuse their actions or blindly defend them, even if what they did goes against biblical principles?

What would I do if they left my life? Would I feel spiritually lost or unable to move forward if they were no longer around? Does their absence cause me to question my identity, purpose, or faith?

Who do I prioritize pleasing? Do I prioritize following a human’s desires or instructions, even when they conflict with God’s will for my life? Or am I committed to pleasing God even when it displeases others?

Who evaluates my progress and growth? Consider who determines the way your achievements are measured. Do you care more about measuring up to someone else’s standard or God’s standard?

Who has the final word? Does a person have the ultimate authority over my life? Or is God actually in charge of my decisions, actions, and priorities?

Who do I look to for strength? When I feel weak or defeated, am I motivated by other people, rather than seeking to deepen my connection and reliance on God?

6 + 3 =
